Specialized Glaucoma Treatment to Safeguard Your Vision
Are you experiencing symptoms like vision changes or eye discomfort? Glaucoma, a group of diseases, poses a significant risk to this vital connection between your eyes and brain. With the potential for irreversible vision loss, glaucoma demands timely attention. As the second leading cause of blindness, it stresses the importance of proactive care. Let Greenwich Ophthalmology Associates safeguard your sight and provide the support you need to preserve your vision.
Understanding Glaucoma
Glaucoma is characterized by damage to the optic nerve, which connects the eye to the brain. The most common type is open-angle glaucoma, affecting approximately 90% of individuals with the disease. It occurs when the intraocular pressure (IOP) becomes too high for the eye to handle. Unfortunately, open-angle glaucoma often develops slowly without noticeable symptoms or vision loss in the early stages.
Open Angle Glaucoma:
Other types of glaucoma include angle-closure glaucoma, normal-tension glaucoma, and congenital glaucoma.

Eye Drops
Medications in the form of eye drops are a standard treatment option for glaucoma. The eye drops reduce the production of aqueous humor (the fluid inside the eye) or improve its drainage.
Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT)
Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT) is a minimally invasive laser procedure to treat glaucoma. A specialized laser is applied to the eye’s drainage angle, targeting specific cells in the trabecular meshwork. SLT is typically an outpatient procedure and can be repeated if necessary. It offers a safe and effective alternative to traditional glaucoma surgeries with minimal discomfort and a quick recovery period.
Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery (MIGS)
Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery (MIGS) refers to a group of surgical procedures designed to manage glaucoma with minimal trauma and faster recovery than traditional surgeries. These procedures aim to improve the eye’s natural drainage system, reducing IOP and preserving vision. MIGS techniques, such as goniotomy and iStent implantation, involve small incisions and utilize microscopic devices to enhance the outflow of fluid from the eye. By offering a safer and less invasive alternative, MIGS provides effective glaucoma management while minimizing post-operative complications and downtime.
Trabeculectomy or Tube Shunt Surgery
Trabeculectomy and tube shunt surgery are surgical procedures used to treat glaucoma by creating alternative pathways to drain intraocular fluid. They are typically reserved for more advanced or severe cases of glaucoma that have not responded to other treatments. These surgeries aim to lower IOP and prevent further damage to the optic nerve, thereby preserving vision and managing glaucoma.
