Best For: Full Range of Vision & Low-Light Clarity

Traditional multifocal IOLs use diffractive rings to create distinct focal points for near and distance vision. While effective, this approach can cause noticeable halos and starbursts around lights, particularly at night. Extended depth of focus lenses elongate the focal range but may not provide as strong near vision as some patients desire. The Odyssey bridges this gap with a freeform diffractive surface that provides continuous, gap-free vision across all distances. Bench testing confirms the Odyssey delivers up to twice the contrast of the PanOptix trifocal in dim lighting, making it uniquely suited for patients who need strong performance in low-light conditions like night driving and evening activities.

The Odyssey also features built-in tolerance for small prescription imperfections, meaning it delivers more consistent results even when biometry calculations are not perfectly on target. This forgiving design, combined with the broadest continuous range of vision of any premium lens currently available in the United States as measured by area under the defocus curve, makes the Odyssey an especially compelling choice for patients seeking near-complete glasses freedom without significant visual quality tradeoffs.

Who Is a Good Candidate?

The TECNIS Odyssey may be an excellent choice if you want the broadest continuous range of vision from a single lens and value excellent low-light performance.

  • Patients motivated by near-complete glasses freedom with minimal visual disturbances
  • Those who need reliable performance for night driving and evening activities
  • Patients with astigmatism that needs correction at the time of surgery (toric version available)
  • May be appropriate for patients with mild, stable glaucoma (surgeon evaluation required)
Considering alternatives? Patients who prioritize the absolute minimum visual disturbances may prefer an extended depth of focus design like the Vivity IOL. Those who want the strongest possible near vision may lean toward a trifocal like the PanOptix. During your cataract evaluation, your surgeon will help you understand all the options.

The Technology Behind the TECNIS Odyssey

Advanced lens engineering that delivers smooth, continuous vision with outstanding clarity

Freeform Diffractive Surface

Traditional multifocal lenses create separate focus points with gaps in between. The Odyssey takes a different approach. Its freeform diffractive surface removes those gaps and provides continuous vision across all distances, with no blurry "dead zones." Johnson & Johnson Vision calls this Full Visual Range technology.

Achromatic Technology

The Odyssey is unique among currently available non-EDOF premium IOLs in correcting chromatic aberration (color fringing) at the lens level. In most diffractive lenses, different colors of light focus at slightly different points, which can cause color halos and reduced sharpness. By correcting this, the Odyssey delivers noticeably sharper contrast, especially in dim lighting.

TECNIS Platform Heritage

The Odyssey is built on the trusted TECNIS platform, which has been implanted in millions of patients worldwide. It features a specially shaped front surface that corrects for common optical imperfections in the eye, producing sharper images and better contrast than older lens designs.

What the Clinical Evidence Shows

The Odyssey was approved by the FDA in October 2024, so much of its data comes from manufacturer studies and early clinical reports. The initial findings are very encouraging.

Rapid Adoption & Patient Satisfaction

The Odyssey reached 100,000 U.S. eyes within its first year, making it the fastest-growing PC-IOL in the U.S. In early clinical data, 93% of patients report no or only mild halos, glare, or starbursts at one month. Additionally, 94% report satisfaction with their overall vision without glasses.

ASCRS 2025 Presentations

Johnson & Johnson presented 22 company-sponsored and investigator-led studies at ASCRS 2025, including four directly involving the Odyssey. These showed excellent visual outcomes at all distances, minimal nighttime visual disturbances, and high rates of glasses independence. Lab comparisons found the Odyssey delivered twice the contrast of the PanOptix in low light and the widest range of clear focus of any U.S. presbyopia-correcting IOL.

Built on Proven TECNIS Symfony Data

The earlier TECNIS Symfony FDA clinical study showed a continuous range of vision from distance through intermediate with low rates of halo and glare, outperforming standard single-focus lenses for intermediate vision. The Odyssey builds on this foundation with additional optical improvements designed to enhance near vision while keeping those visual quality advantages.

What to Expect with the TECNIS Odyssey

Understanding your vision quality, adjustment timeline, and long-term outcomes

Vision Quality & Range

Most patients can expect clear, functional vision at near, intermediate, and far distances. That means everyday tasks like driving, watching television, recognizing faces, working on a computer, reading a dashboard, and reading books, menus, and smartphones. Very fine print or reading in dim lighting may still be easier with glasses for some patients.

The goal is to greatly reduce how often you need glasses, not necessarily to achieve perfect vision in every situation. Most patients with premium IOLs report high satisfaction with how much less they rely on glasses.

How Your Brain Adjusts (Neuroadaptation)

Most patients notice significantly improved vision within days of surgery. Your brain typically needs one to three months to fully adjust to the Odyssey's extended range of focus. During this time, any nighttime visual effects like mild halos or glare tend to fade as your brain adapts.

This adjustment period is moderate compared to other premium lenses. Extended depth of focus designs like the Vivity tend to adapt faster (one to four weeks), while trifocal lenses like the PanOptix can take three to six months. To help your brain adapt more quickly, use your vision at all distances every day and avoid relying on backup glasses.

Long-Term Outcomes

The TECNIS Odyssey is designed to be a permanent replacement for your natural lens. Once implanted, the lens does not wear out or need to be replaced. Cataracts cannot return because your natural lens has been removed. The most common change years after surgery is a slight clouding of the membrane behind the lens, which is easily treated with a quick, painless YAG laser procedure in the office.

Over 90% of patients who chose a premium IOL reported satisfaction with their lens choice in an ASCRS survey. The long-term benefits of needing glasses less often typically outweigh any adjustment challenges during the first weeks after surgery.

Your Cataract Surgery Journey

From evaluation to recovery, here is what to expect every step of the way

1

Evaluation & Planning

Your journey begins with a thorough cataract evaluation at our Stamford office. We take detailed measurements of your eye, including its length, corneal shape, and astigmatism, and check the health of your retina, optic nerve, and overall eye. You and your surgeon will talk about your lifestyle, visual priorities, and expectations to determine whether the Odyssey or another lens option like the Light Adjustable Lens is the best fit for your needs.

2

Day of Surgery

Cataract surgery with the TECNIS Odyssey is performed at our Surgery Center at 55 Holly Hill Lane. The procedure itself typically takes about 15 to 20 minutes, though you should plan to be at the center for about two hours total. You will receive numbing drops so you feel no pain, and many patients also receive a mild sedative to help them relax. Your surgeon removes the clouded natural lens using ultrasound technology and then places the Odyssey IOL precisely inside the eye.

3

Recovery & Follow-Up

Most patients notice improved vision within a day or two. You will use prescription eye drops for several weeks to prevent infection and reduce inflammation. During your initial recovery, avoid rubbing your eye, heavy lifting, and swimming. Most patients return to light activities within a day or two and can drive again within a few days. Full adjustment to the Odyssey's extended range of focus typically continues over one to three months.

Cost and Insurance Considerations

Premium Lens Pricing

The TECNIS Odyssey IOL is classified as a premium presbyopia-correcting lens, which means it includes advanced features beyond what standard cataract surgery provides. Medicare and most private insurance plans cover the basic cost of cataract surgery with a standard single-focus IOL. If you choose a premium lens like the Odyssey, there is an additional out-of-pocket cost for the upgraded technology.

We provide clear, upfront pricing during your consultation so you can make an informed decision. Many patients find the investment worthwhile when they consider how much less they will need to depend on glasses for the rest of their lives.

Weighing the Investment

When considering a premium IOL, think about your visual priorities and how much you value needing glasses less often. If you currently wear glasses for distance, reading, and computer work, a premium lens can make your daily routine much simpler. If you are wondering whether a premium IOL is worth the cost, consider how often you reach for glasses now and how that would change.

Our surgeons are committed to helping you understand all your options so you can make the choice that fits your lifestyle and budget.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about the TECNIS Odyssey IOL answered by our cataract surgery team

Will I be completely free of glasses with the TECNIS Odyssey?
Most patients experience a big reduction in glasses dependence for daily activities including driving, computer work, and reading. In early clinical data, 94 percent of patients report satisfaction with their overall vision without glasses. That said, some situations like very fine print or reading in dim lighting may still be easier with glasses. The goal is to greatly reduce how often you need glasses, not to guarantee complete independence in every scenario.
How does the Odyssey compare to the TECNIS Symfony?
The TECNIS Odyssey builds on the extended depth of focus technology first introduced in the Symfony, with major optical improvements including a freeform diffractive surface and Achromatic Technology. These upgrades are designed to improve near vision while maintaining visual quality. The Odyssey is classified as a Full Visual Range IOL, representing the next generation of this technology with a wider range of clear vision and better low-light contrast. Your surgeon can explain the specific differences and help you choose.
Will I see halos around lights at night?
Some patients notice mild halos during the adjustment period, especially around bright lights at night. The Odyssey's Achromatic Technology and advanced optical design are specifically built to minimize these effects. In early clinical reports, 93 percent of patients report no or only mild halos, glare, or starbursts at one month. Most patients find that any halos become much less noticeable as the brain adapts over the first several weeks after surgery.
How long does it take to adjust to the TECNIS Odyssey?
Most patients notice improved vision within days of surgery. Full adjustment, during which your brain learns to use the extended range of focus automatically, typically takes one to three months. This is moderate compared to other premium lenses. Extended depth of focus designs like the Vivity tend to adapt faster at one to four weeks, while trifocal lenses like the PanOptix can take three to six months. The vast majority of patients are satisfied with their vision once the adjustment period is complete.
Is the TECNIS Odyssey available in a toric version?
Yes, the TECNIS Odyssey Toric is available for patients who have both cataracts and corneal astigmatism. The toric version provides the same extended range of vision while also correcting your astigmatism during surgery. Data presented at AAO 2025 showed favorable astigmatism tolerance with the Odyssey design. Your surgeon will recommend the right version based on your preoperative measurements.
How does the Odyssey perform in low light compared to other premium lenses?
The Odyssey is specifically designed to perform well in dim lighting. Lab testing shows it delivers up to twice the contrast of the PanOptix trifocal in low light, and its Achromatic Technology corrects color fringing that affects all other diffractive lenses. With over 95 percent light utilization, its contrast performance in dim settings is comparable to or better than a standard single-focus lens.
Is the Odyssey appropriate for patients with mild glaucoma?
Early data from the TECNIS platform suggests the Odyssey may work well for patients with mild, stable glaucoma. Related studies presented at ASCRS 2025 showed that patients with suspected glaucoma achieved 20/30 or better at all distances with glasses independence. Your surgeon will carefully evaluate your specific glaucoma status, visual field, and disease stability to determine if the Odyssey is a good option for you.
What makes the Odyssey different from a traditional multifocal or EDOF lens?
Johnson & Johnson Vision classifies the Odyssey as a Full Visual Range IOL, which is a new lens category. Traditional multifocals create separate focal points with gaps in between. Extended depth of focus lenses stretch the range of clear vision but may not provide as strong near vision. The Odyssey uses a freeform diffractive surface to provide smooth, gap-free vision across all distances while also correcting chromatic aberration. No other premium lens offers this combination.
How quickly has the Odyssey been adopted?
The Odyssey reached over 100,000 U.S. eyes within its first year following FDA approval in October 2024, making it the fastest-growing PC-IOL in the U.S. This rapid adoption reflects strong clinical performance and high surgeon confidence in the lens design.
