First & Only FDA-Approved IPL for Dry Eye

OptiLIGHT IPL:
Dry Eye Light Therapy

The first and only FDA-approved Intense Pulsed Light therapy for dry eye disease caused by Meibomian Gland Dysfunction. OptiLIGHT by Lumenis targets the root cause of your dry eye with patented Optimal Pulse Technology, backed by a robust body of clinical evidence.

IPL therapy for dry eye

Best For: MGD-Related Dry Eye Disease

Most dry eye treatments like artificial tears, warm compresses, and prescription drops only manage your symptoms temporarily. They do not fix the actual cause of your discomfort. OptiLIGHT IPL is different. It uses gentle pulses of broad-spectrum light to target the inflammation, blocked meibomian glands, and abnormal blood vessels that drive your dry eye disease. This means you can experience real, lasting relief rather than just masking the problem day after day.

OptiLIGHT is the only IPL device with FDA approval specifically for dry eye management. FDA approval means the device was tested in its own clinical trials and proven safe and effective for dry eye. With its patented Optimal Pulse Technology, OptiLIGHT also eliminates Demodex mites, reduces harmful bacteria, and stimulates collagen production around the eyes, treating multiple root causes in a single 10 to 15 minute session.

86% Of Dry Eye Cases Caused by MGD
83.3% Demodex Eradication Rate
4 Initial Treatment Sessions
6-12mo Maintenance Interval

Who Is a Good Candidate?

OptiLIGHT IPL may be right for you if you have been struggling with dry eye symptoms that eye drops, warm compresses, or other treatments have not fully resolved.

  • Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD) causing chronic dry eye symptoms
  • Ocular rosacea with persistent redness and irritation around the eyes
  • Demodex-related blepharitis or chronic eyelid inflammation
  • Chronic dry eye unresponsive to artificial tears or prescription drops
  • Recurring styes or chalazia caused by blocked meibomian glands
  • Contact lens intolerance due to dry eye discomfort
  • Fitzpatrick skin types I through IV (fair to medium skin tones)
Not sure if OptiLIGHT is right for you? Patients with darker skin tones (Fitzpatrick types V or VI), active skin infections, pregnancy, or certain light-sensitive medical conditions may not be appropriate candidates. Patients on photosensitizing medications or who have had recent cosmetic procedures should also wait before starting treatment. During your dry eye evaluation, we will review your complete history and help you understand all available options.

Helps your tear film last longer so your eyes stay moist and comfortable between blinks.

Alleviate Abnormal Blood Vessels

Closes down the tiny blood vessels near your eyelids that keep feeding redness and irritation.

The Technology Behind OptiLIGHT IPL

Precision light-based engineering that targets dry eye at its source with every pulse

Optimal Pulse Technology (OPT)

Most IPL devices were built for skin treatments, not the delicate area around your eyes. OptiLIGHT uses Lumenis' patented Optimal Pulse Technology to deliver targeted, uniform, and precisely controlled pulses of light with no-spike consistency. Each pulse is identical and reproducible, making it safe and effective for the sensitive periocular area where standard IPL devices cannot safely operate.

SapphireCool Water-Cooled Tip

OptiLIGHT features a patented SapphireCool continuous contact cooling system built directly into the handpiece. This allows the device to deliver higher energy levels needed for strong clinical results while simultaneously keeping your skin cool and comfortable throughout the treatment. The result is a procedure that is both more effective and more pleasant than treatments without this technology.

OptiTip Precision Applicator

The OptiTip is a specialized applicator designed to optimize and regulate light energy delivery in the most delicate areas directly surrounding the eye. It ensures safe, hygienic, and consistent energy output with every application, giving precise control over where the treatment energy goes. This level of precision is what allows OptiLIGHT to treat the periocular zone that no other IPL device can safely reach.

What the Clinical Evidence Shows

OptiLIGHT is supported by a robust body of clinical research including randomized controlled trials, meta-analyses, and prospective studies.

FDA Approval & Demodex Eradication

OptiLIGHT holds FDA approval, not just FDA clearance, meaning it was tested in dedicated clinical trials specifically for dry eye management. A 2021 prospective study of 150 patients using OptiLIGHT's OPT technology confirmed an 83.3% Demodex eradication rate at 3 months, along with significant improvements in OSDI symptom scores, tear break-up time, corneal staining, and meibum quality.

Randomized Controlled Trials & Meta-Analyses

A 2020 systematic review and meta-analysis by Liu et al. covering 4 randomized controlled trials and 242 subjects confirmed significant improvements in tear break-up time, lid margin features, and meibomian gland secretion quality. A 2025 meta-analysis covering 6 studies and 329 participants reported a Demodex eradication risk ratio of 1.41 with no significant adverse effects reported across any of the studies.

Long-Term Relief & Gland Function

A 2023 prospective study by Castro et al. involving 176 eyes confirmed significant symptom score reductions with benefits sustained at 6 months. A 2025 randomized study published in Nature showed that 3 OptiLIGHT sessions provided superior long-term benefit compared to 2 sessions across non-invasive tear break-up time, tear-film lipid layer, and meibomian gland expression quality. A separate 2025 study of 73 patients found IPL effective in 79.5% of patients.

Clinical data from peer-reviewed publications, randomized controlled trials, and FDA filings. Individual results may vary. Discuss expected outcomes with your provider during your consultation.

What to Expect with OptiLIGHT IPL

Understanding your treatment experience, results timeline, and long-term maintenance plan

Your Treatment Experience

Each OptiLIGHT IPL session takes only 10 to 15 minutes and requires no surgery, no needles, and no downtime. Your face is cleaned thoroughly before protective eye shields are placed over your eyes. A cool, clear gel is applied to the treatment area, then gentle pulses of light are delivered from ear to ear in two passes. After the light treatment, a gentle meibomian gland expression is performed to release the loosened oils.

Most patients describe the sensation as a mild warmth or a gentle snapping feeling, similar to a warm light briefly going on and off across the face. The treatment is well-tolerated and comfortable. You can return to your normal activities immediately after each session.

When You Will See Results

Most patients begin noticing meaningful improvement in their dry eye symptoms after their 2nd or 3rd treatment session. You may notice your eyes feel less gritty, scratchy, and irritated, and that you are reaching for eye drops less often. Meibum quality also becomes visibly better as oils progress from thick and unhealthy to thinner and clearer across the treatment series.

Full benefits are typically experienced after completing all 4 sessions in the initial series. Patients with more severe baseline symptoms often see the greatest degree of improvement. Many patients are able to significantly reduce or completely stop using artificial tears after completing the treatment series.

Long-Term Maintenance

OptiLIGHT provides long-lasting relief, with clinical studies showing benefits sustained for 6 months or more after the initial 4-session series. Because dry eye is a chronic condition influenced by factors like screen time, environment, hormones, and aging, periodic maintenance sessions help preserve your results over time.

Most patients require maintenance sessions every 6 to 12 months, though some may benefit from sessions every 3 to 4 months depending on the severity of their condition. A follow-up evaluation is scheduled 4 to 6 weeks after your 4th treatment to assess your response and plan your ongoing care. OptiLIGHT also works very well alongside other dry eye therapies including omega-3 supplements, eyelid hygiene routines.

Your OptiLIGHT IPL Treatment Journey

From your first consultation to long-term relief, here is what to expect every step of the way

1

Dry Eye Evaluation & Consultation

Your journey begins with a thorough dry eye evaluation at our Stamford office. We assess your meibomian gland function, tear film stability, tear break-up time, and eyelid health to confirm whether OptiLIGHT IPL is the right treatment for you. We also review your skin tone using the Fitzpatrick scale to determine the safest and most effective treatment settings. You and your provider will discuss your symptoms, lifestyle, and treatment goals to create a personalized plan.

2

Your 4 OptiLIGHT IPL Sessions

Your initial treatment series consists of 4 sessions scheduled 2 to 4 weeks apart. Each session takes only 10 to 15 minutes at our office. Your face is cleaned, protective eye shields are placed, a cool gel is applied, and gentle light pulses are delivered from ear to ear. A meibomian gland expression is then performed to release the loosened oils. Most patients start noticing improvement after the 2nd or 3rd session. You can return to all normal activities immediately after each visit.

3

Follow-Up & Maintenance Plan

A follow-up evaluation is scheduled 4 to 6 weeks after your 4th session to measure your results and assess your meibomian gland health. Most patients maintain their results with sessions every 6 to 12 months. Between visits, we may recommend preservative-free artificial tears, warm compresses, omega-3 supplements, and eyelid hygiene as part of your ongoing care. For patients with more complex dry eye, OptiLIGHT can be.

Preparing for Your OptiLIGHT IPL Treatment

Before Your Treatment

Two weeks before your appointment, avoid prolonged sun exposure on your face. If you must be outside, apply SPF 30+ broad-spectrum sunscreen and wear UV-protective sunglasses. One week before your appointment, stop using retinol, retinoids, glycolic acid, and any exfoliating skincare products around your eyes and face. Stop using bleaching agents 2 to 3 days prior.

On the day of your appointment, arrive with a clean face and no makeup, lotion, perfume, or sunscreen. Remove your contact lenses before arriving and bring your glasses. Stay well-hydrated. Let your provider know about any changes in medications, health history, or skin sensitivities, and whether you are pregnant or nursing. Men should arrive clean-shaven in the treatment area.

If you recently had Botox, dermal fillers, a chemical peel, or laser treatment on your face, wait at least one full month before beginning OptiLIGHT IPL.

After Your Treatment

Recovery after OptiLIGHT IPL is straightforward and most patients return to their normal activities immediately. Right after treatment, mild redness or a warm feeling in the treated area is completely normal and typically goes away within a few hours. Any sun spots or freckles in the treated area may temporarily look darker before they dry out and fade within 7 to 10 days.

For the first week after treatment, protect your skin from direct sun exposure and use SPF 30+ sunscreen when going outside. Avoid retinol, glycolic acids, and exfoliating products on the treated area for one week. Use only a gentle cleanser and moisturizer. It is normal to experience a slight increase in eye dryness during the first 48 hours after each session as congested oils are cleared from your glands. Use preservative-free artificial tears as needed. Avoid eye makeup for 1 to 2 days and skip hot showers, saunas, and intense exercise for 48 hours after each session.

If you notice prolonged redness, unexpected swelling, blistering, or irritation lasting beyond 48 hours, contact our office right away.

Is OptiLIGHT IPL painful?
Most patients feel only a mild warmth or a gentle snapping sensation during treatment, similar to the brief feeling of a warm light going on and off across the face. OptiLIGHT IPL is well-tolerated, comfortable, and requires no numbing medication or anesthesia. The SapphireCool contact cooling system helps keep the treatment comfortable throughout each session. How many OptiLIGHT sessions will I need?
The standard OptiLIGHT treatment course consists of 4 initial sessions scheduled 2 to 4 weeks apart, ideally 3 to 4 weeks between each. After completing the initial series, maintenance sessions every 6 to 12 months help preserve your long-term results. Some patients with more severe dry eye may benefit from maintenance sessions every 3 to 4 months. Your provider will recommend the right schedule based on your response to treatment and the severity of your condition.
When will I start noticing results?
Many patients report noticeable improvement in their dry eye symptoms after their 2nd or 3rd session. Will my OptiLIGHT results last?

Patients with a history of skin cancer in the treatment area, active cold sores, or recent Botox or filler injections within the past month should also wait before beginning treatment. Always share your complete medical history before starting OptiLIGHT IPL.
Can OptiLIGHT be combined with other dry eye treatments?
Yes. OptiLIGHT works very well alongside other dry eye therapies including prescription anti-inflammatory eye drops, omega-3 supplements, eyelid hygiene routines.
