Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy uses controlled pulses of broad-spectrum light applied to the skin around the eyelids. It reduces inflammation, closes abnormal blood vessels that contribute to chronic irritation, eliminates Demodex mites, and improves meibomian gland function. A typical course involves 3 to 4 sessions spaced several weeks apart. Many patients notice improvement after the first or second session, with results that can last for months.

IPL works best for patients with evaporative dry eye caused by meibomian gland dysfunction, ocular rosacea, or chronic eyelid inflammation that has not responded adequately to drops or warm compresses alone. Candidacy depends on skin type, medical history, and the specific characteristics of your condition. Your doctor will evaluate whether IPL is appropriate for you during a comprehensive dry eye consultation.

LipiFlow uses thermal pulsation to physically unblock clogged meibomian glands from the inside of the eyelid, restoring the flow of natural oils into the tear film. IPL uses light energy to reduce inflammation and abnormal blood vessels along the eyelid margin that contribute to gland dysfunction. They address different aspects of dry eye and are often used together for patients with moderate to severe evaporative dry eye.

A LipiView scan measures the thickness of the lipid (oil) layer of your tear film and provides high-definition images of your meibomian glands. This allows your doctor to see whether your glands are healthy, partially blocked, or significantly compromised. The scan is painless, takes only a few minutes, and provides data that directly guides your treatment plan.

While dry eye disease is typically a chronic condition, it can be effectively managed with the right combination of treatments. For many patients, in-office therapies like IPL and LipiFlow, combined with prescription drops and lifestyle adjustments, provide significant and long-lasting symptom relief. Early diagnosis and consistent treatment are key to preventing the condition from worsening over time.

Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) occurs when the tiny oil-producing glands in your eyelids become blocked or produce oil that is too thick to flow properly. This compromises the outer lipid layer of your tear film, causing tears to evaporate too quickly. MGD is the leading cause of evaporative dry eye and can be diagnosed with LipiView imaging and treated with LipiFlow and IPL therapy.
